The Carousel Never Stops Turning:

Up & down,

round & round,

clinging to a

horse of steel.

Ruminating on

the same turbulent ideas.

The diseased dog

biting off its leg.

Looking for obstacles

that are never there.

The bird flying

into glass again & again,

only wanting to be let in.

All the memories,

flow like rain.

A constant downpour

of my sins & shame.

Forming puddles,

soon floods,

tsunamis that waste me.

Why can’t I celebrate?

When do I get my

big band & confetti?

Will the waves relent?

Will they apologize

for bashing me?

Or will they search

for their next victim,

as they drag them

out to the same seas?

A Bed Of Oleander:

Not pretty.

Nor delicate.

Dark hues and,

harsh shades.

Claws and thorns,

that say “stay away”.

Nothing too simple—

Intricate.

Detailed.

Patterns that swirl,

and circle round again.

Losing, finding,

then losing direction.

Nothing sweet.

No soft scents.

I want the toxins

to numb lips.

The sharpest lullaby—

an ode to death’s kiss.

May Flowers:

Sometimes I bloom

in spite of the world surrounding.

A spike, driven by light,

exploding into buds in the nursery.

Petals unfolding into spirals,

buds fanning out into intricate discs.

Shaking off protective coats, opening, closing, then opening again.

Not knowing who you’ll be once the cycles end.

We’re all chasing the sun,

preparing for what lies ahead.

Sunlight streaming through trees

Illuminating the cracks in my path

Breeze cooling me off

As the sun beams off my back

Cool water trickling down

Offering the most beautiful shimmers,

Offering a space to relax

Birds singing all the right notes

The perfect soundtrack for the trek ahead

Look around you

How nature opens up to surround you

How life blooms despite

But still offers you a chance to look

If you look close enough, it’s all friendship…

Nobody saw through or past

Impure, damaged goods,

too much baggage

Forged under pressure,

Results of growing up too fast

Then it all began to fade

Day to day, feelings changed

They left a warmth

That I could not disintegrate

Where there used to be frost-bitten trails

There were now streams of golden sun rays

The dark amber now a golden glow

As the sun peeks through my window

Enveloping the kitchen in marvelous light

Disintegrating chills brought in last night

A ball forms as the honey learns it’s direction

Slowly turning into a drip

Then another, hesitant

As if previous escapes

caused it to be reprimanded

I wait, fingers daring to tap the counter

Willing the honey to move faster

My drink is getting cold

The day, so new, is beginning to grow old

Please, just fall!

Every second spent waiting is one missed

I turn sorrow into stanza

All the pain poured into pages.

But nothing ever frees me from misery

It’s just enough to get through another morning

Week after week

I watch time turn to sand

Moments, now just specks of color

Hidden in the cracks and crevices of hands

Dig and dig, mold, shape, burrow, then ache

Find yourself hidden within the dust and shame

Month after month

I let hope swallow me

Maybe this will be my new beginning

But time shatters down; rainfall from skies

What do we become after we face our prime

I have seen them, you know

The ones who succumb

Warm sepia to taupe grey

Decaying beneath the sun

Lives that savor flesh,

Crafting the perfect storm

Too much rain, so we are submerged

Too much hail, destroys all our worth

Not enough light, so we’re frozen and stale

Strong winds drag us away from ourselves

Who am I without the seasons banging on my door

The artist with no paint

The poet with no words

If I’m not sad what will you relate to

When I’m too happy it all feels fatal

So I surrender to the sorrow

So often it feels as if it’s truly mine

My thoughts

My pain

My tears

My cries

But held for too long, sorrow burns into eyes

Overtaking the mind with a deadly fire

What if I leap but do not fall

What if the sleep leaves me restful

What if the answers pour out of the wine

What if the cut grows into new designs

These tricks the sorrow taunts

overtime become demands

These games the sorrow plays

Soon become a rope that ties hands

The cold has come at last

Restricting my body and mind

Holding the sorrows at the edge

Finally allowing me rest

I enjoy the way sunlight tastes

But I am always grateful for the break

So don’t fall into dejection or pity

I remain undercover

I don’t even remember what you did

I have no reason to stay bitter

You weren’t worth the first chance

You are just so consistently nefarious,

It is impossible to forget.

You will always choose chaos over peace

It would be irresponsible to forgive

But I don’t hate you

Not yet

You say I am abusive

But I’m only paying for my father’s sins

I have no reason to seek power

I was born into this world at their behest

But even a caged animal must bite

If only to remember it has teeth

For one day I might survive

And must shred what aims to stop me

You see the violent learn from violence

Oh how quickly we forget

Yes, you may have broken me

But I saw, up close, how fragile you are

As I wrapped myself in bandage

But, still, I don’t hate you

Not yet

You say I’m weak

But it’s just that the bruises were so notable

I no longer shudder at the pain

Because I learned to be imperceptible

Maybe I gagged at the sight of blood

Before I learned to use a second coat

Maybe I’m flesh just like you

But the scars make it harder to break through

Your words may stick

But your memory dwindles

You once took center stage

But now the curtain is closed

Leave quickly and quietly

Your illusion is all you own

Once upon a time

In a land far far away

I dreamed of this future

I crafted this stage

The part where I live for me

Where I hear, speak, and do what I please

Not looking for opinions about who I can be

Once upon a time

In a land barren and gray pool

I sat contemplating,

Who would ever understand me

But today I know with absolute certainty

It was never meant for anyone else to see

I am the one who gives my life meaning

I am the one who provides my own clarity

Years of poking, prodding, seeking remedies

Everything brought me back to disparity

Nothing can hold me together quite like me

A flower blooms from that which is already within the seed.
